Peak Oil, Global Warming, and other factors are converging to challenge our cherished tradition of driving anywhere we want in gasoline-powered vehicles. Join CRES and a panel of experts to discuss the increasing variety of ways to get around with little or no gasoline.

 CRES is assembling a panel of experts (Speakers TBA) to discuss various electric vehicles, bicycles, transit, walkable communities, tele-commuting, and other low- and no-energy transportation options.

Biofuels Research by Mark R. Nimlos

Why: Driven by the desire to limit imported oil and legislative mandates, research is being conducted to investigate the use of biomass to produce liquid transportation fuels. This research involves studies of plant science, chemistry, physics and engineering, and to be effective, technoeconomic analysis must be conducted to address important cost drivers. This presentation will discuss some of the important research efforts in biofuels production and how they are tied to technical targets to improve the economic viability of biofuels.

Mark R. Nimlos is a Principal Scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the National Bioenergy Center. He is the leader of the Gasification Modeling and Optimization Task for the Biomass Program at NREL. He is also leader of the Biomass Molecular Sciences Section in the National Bioenergy Center. He has worked NREL for 20 years and is currently active thermochemical and biochemical conversion technologies for biofuels. He received his Ph. D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Colorado and has over 70 publications in peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Jerry Stevenson, 2009 CRES Volunteer of the Year

Jerry Stevenson,  has been named CRES Volunteer of the Year for 2009.  Jerry (past president of SECRES) is honored for his role as co-chair of the popular 2008 Colorado Renewable Energy Conference last year in Pueblo.

The statewide award is well-deserved, for Jerry’s many hours of service & leadership on behalf of SECRES and CRES. Congratulations, Jerry!

Also, Carol Tombari from NREL has been named as the CRES Larson-Notari award winner for 2009. Carol was keynote speaker at last year’s Solar Tour in Colorado Springs, and author of “Power of the People: America’s New Electricity Choices”.

The SECRES community is pleased to recognize these amazing professionals who volunteer their time to promote renewable energy in Colorado.

Susan Innis is the Colorado Carbon Fund Program Manager for the Governor’s Energy Office. Prior to joining GEO in 2007, she spent eight years as an Energy Policy Advisor and Green Power Marketing Director at Western Resource Advocates, a regional conservation law and policy center. During this time she was involved with several industry groups, including Green-e (Governance Board, 2002-07), Colorado Renewable Energy Society (Board member 2006-07), New Mexico Coalition for Clean Affordable Energy (Board member, 2000-07) and the National Wind Coordinating Committee (Steering Committee, 2002-07). Before working on energy issues, she worked as an Urban Park Ranger in New York City and a researcher with an international marine conservation organization, Project Seahorse. Susan holds a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Colorado Denver and a BSc in Biology from McGill University (Montreal, Canada).
